PAINTING OUT OF LINE My painting has evolved into a new way of defining pictorial space. The shapes (colour-space-areas), once contained within a rectangular space, now themselves define the perimeter of the painting. The shapes realise their full dynamic and penetrate the wall space; my motifs have extended the conventional line and evolved into a painted mobile surface. The interaction of colour is the form in my painting; intense colours penetrate the environment around them, crossing the line, and creating pictorial form through the location and dialogue of painted colour. Colour is light. The light of the environment is the colour of time; as light moves, reverberates, increases and decreases, the paint surface and direction of brushstroke become part of the mobility of the painting. The image is located in colour and surface, mobility and location. Andrew Smith - Moreia Studio July 2002 |
