In 2002 a working relationship has been developed between Wales and Galicia through La Solaina - Pilono. A meeting in 2002 with Elizabeth Ross a Mexican artist ...... has meant that Andrew Smith has been invited to attend an artists residency in Mexico along with two other artists from Wales. Andrew has this year (2003) worked by invitation in Macedonia with ....... and with our colleagues from The Hague Art Circle in The Netherlands a regional communication is now taking place in three regions of Europe with other contacts being developed in Poland, Bulgaria, and Germany.

Exhibition 2004
De Haagse Kunstkring (The Hague Art Circle) and eight Harlech Biennale Associates in The Hague - 3 - 29 June 2004.Members of De Haagse Kunstkring (The Hague Art Circle) have contributed to the development of the Harlech Biennale since its inaugural exhibition in 1994. The exhibition is seen as an important European precursor to Harlech Biennale 2004 and the Harlech International Residencies to be held in July and August 2004

Neil Powell, Andrew Smith and myself met with the Board of The Hague Art Circle on the 17 and 18 November 2003 to discuss the proposed exhibition. See below for information on The Hague Art Circle. The meeting was successful in establishing face to face contact with artists who were only names up to that point. It was exciting to find that both The Hague Art Circle and ICAW work to a professional rigor of informed integrity in visual art.

The Hague Art Circle - history

The artist society the Hague Art Circle dates back to 1891. From the beginning of its existence the society caused sensation. From a cultural-historical point of view Art Circle reflects over more than a century of Dutch art/history. The members list over the years shows names of well-known visual artists like August Rodin, C. Westerik, Han van Meegeren the architect H.P. Berlage, authors like J.C. Bloem, Hella Haasse , Pierre Dubois, Martinus Nijhoff, actors like Louis Bouwmeester and Albert Vogel, a musician like Willem Noske and a cabaret artist like Paul van Vliet. In 1892, the year after the foundation, the Hague Art Circle was the very first to organize a retrospective show with the "complete" works of Vincent van Gogh in The Netherlands. In that time Van Gogh was still unknown to the larger public, or at best known as a controversial artist. The well-known Dutch artist Jan Toorop was the one who introduced Van Gogh to The Hague. A year later Toorop did similarly with Les Vingts, the Belgian avant-garde at that time.

For over more than a century now the Hague Art Circle takes prominent rank in the cultural climate of The Hague. Here artists of various branches meet their fellows as well as other companions in arts. Also many inhabitants of The Hague city not being artists themselves but cherishing a warm cultural interest have become non-acting member of the Hague Art Circle.

This explains the large number of 500 members. Two-third part of this number is artist (painter, sculptor, architect, designer, actor, author, musician, filmmaker). The rest is art loving non-acting member.

Th e Hague Art Circle - the building
The Hague Art Circle is located at Denneweg 64, in the very centre of the so-called hamlet- 2005, a lively area in the inner town of The Hague.

Artists and art lovers have the opportunity to meet in an open, easy atmosphere. Here are organized exhibitions as well as lectures and concerts.

The main gallery is situated on the ground floor, and consists of two larger exhibition spaces. One of which has a view towards the street. Here exhibitions are held with both artworks by artist members, as art and design of current interest.

On the first floor is the Albert Vogel audience-chamber, which is used for concerts and lectures, and also as a third exhibition space.
