Enclosures

Keeping in mind the theme of ‘International Crosscurrents 2009’ I chose to make my detailed drawings of walls and fences, between the accommodation where the artists were staying, and the Memorial Hall where they were working, thereby constantly hearing the reaction of the international group to the Harlech surroundings, as they walked by.
Some of the unexpected happenings, like the group of cows which came to my car window to investigate me, and the finding of drainage holes in walls, which I had passed for the last 13 years, without noticing, were carefully recorded.   The different types of stone walling, both in fields and houses, and types of fences (wire, wood, slate, metal) and railings, all led me to ‘Enclosures’ with all its connotations of boundaries and limitations.
The large work, on paper with pencil, masking tape and acrylic paint, were worked, directly from these sketches.  I intend to explore this theme and maybe move my boundaries and stretch my limitations.
