Presenoldeb - Presence

I wanted to make work about the human embodied presence, moving and static, in space and place.
I made a sculptural installation using locally sourced recycled rubber, an organic yet industrial material which is familiar to me and has many associations that are important to me, to do with skin, age, inside/outside, the familiar becoming strange, growth (both malign and benign) and rebirth.  First I made a wooden armature, with a classical model in mind, using my interpretation of Hogarth’s line of beauty for the composition.  The rubber skin I made was slipped over the structure to fall in baroque folds, the whole suggesting a latent bodily presence.
On the first Monday of the residency I made a performance using the same rubber material.  This was shown at Casoria Museum of Contemporary Art in Naples, at one of the many real time internet meetings we had at this Biennale, making live and visible our connection to the diverse cultures represented by the artists who were taking part.  My performance was to music by Ann Matthews, singer, song writer and composer, part of a collaborative project of new work which we have been engaged in since 2007.
