Proposal for NEXO 2007 Currently I am involved in developing my work as part of an Arts Council of Wales “Creative Wales” award. This involves ongoing studio work with large-scale paintings that explore images derived from diverse sources and contexts to make works that play with scale, spatial displacement and the poetics of illusion. As well as dealing with representation I am interested in making a “painting” rather than a “picture” so I am have concerns with the material nature of the surface and image and ground relationships. Current practise also builds on work I did with the Welsh National Opera creating projected images and set design for opera. I am interested in the way collaboration can inform my thinking about painting and develop content. I am also currently involved in experimental work at Diversions Dance Company in an ongoing collaborative project between dance and visual arts. Therefore I am interested in the Toledo project in terms of the context and the possibilities that the venue offers in terms of the display of two dimensional work, digital projection and the fact that it is a centre that also presents performance and so on. I think this might prompt a piece or series of pieces in different media. I would be interested in responding to the context, through experiencing the city and viewing the space to make a piece as a response. The final form might play with scale and illusion through pieces that would involve an element of painting and digital projection, setting up some kind of resonance between to the two pieces and the context.
